US Postal Service Shipping Bug Fixed

Dec 11, 2008
In order to calculate accurate shipping quotes for our customers this website links directly to software provided by the US Postal Service.

According to the USPS they have "continued to experience intermittent system interruptions" in their service and this has resulted in several of our customers experiencing "system errors" when attempting to checkout from our store.

The USPS is working to fix the bug in their shipping tools but in the meantime we have installed a back-up system for calculating postage if/when the USPS software fails in the future. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions about your order or continue to have difficulty please email us at orders[at]dischord.com or call 703-351-7507.

Holiday Shipping Reminders

Dec 05, 2008
Please be advised if you are ordering items for the holiday season that our delivery estimations are based on the date your order is shipped and not necessarily the date it is ordered. The vast majority of our packages go out within 48 hours (and in may cases well before that) but once they are out the door a specific delivery date cannot be guaranteed.

Also, during the high-volume holiday season packages can sometimes take longer to arrive from the USPS than normal. While Media Mail packages generally arrive within 7-10 days of being shipped they can sometimes take up to 3 weeks to deliver. If you need your order to arrive by a certain date you may want to consider using First Class or Priority delivery options.

Gift Packaging for Vinyl: Please note that Basla routinely removes the records from their covers before shipping them to prevent the periodic tearing of covers from records moving inside the sleeve. If you're ordering vinyl as a gift and would prefer for the record to remain in its shrink-wrap please include a note and we'll keep it sealed for you.

Here are some popular gift items:

Banned In DC: Photos and Anecdotes from The DC Punk Scene '79-'95

Two New Books: "Radio Silence" & "Interrobang?!"

Oct 31, 2008
We are carrying two new books that are definitely worth your attention: Radio Silence and Interrobang?!
Radio Silence:

Radio Silence documents the ignored space between the Ramones and Nirvana through the words and images of the pre-Internet era where the hardcore community built on do-it-yourself ethics. Authors Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo have cataloged private collections of unseen images, personal letters, original artwork, and various ephemera from the hardcore scene circa 1978-1993. Unseen photos lay next to hand-made t-shirts and original artwork brought to life by the words of their creators and fans. Radio Silence includes over 500 images of unseen photographs, illustrations, rare records, t-shirts, and fanzines presented in a manner that abandons the aesthetic clichés normally employed to depict the genre and lets the subject matter speak for itself. Contributions by Jeff Nelson, Dave Smalley, Walter Schreifels, Cynthia Connolly, Pat Dubar, Gus Peña, Rusty Moore, and Gavin Ogelsby with an essay by Mark Owens.

Interrobang?!:

A collection of writings and interviews is edited by Sharon Cheslow ( Banned In DC contributor) and explores the relationship between musical traditions within a familial frame. Both the interviewers and interviewees present in this volume include Ian MacKaye, Cynthia Connolly, Sharon Cheslow and more.

Faraquet "Anthology 1998-98" Available Here Now, In Stores July 28

Jul 16, 2008
Dischord will be releasing the Faraquet singles compilation, Anthology 1997-98, to stores on July 28, 2008 on CD, MP3 and 12"LP+MP3. This album is available now, exclusively on the Dischord Website.

In the summer of 2007 the members of Faraquet announced plans to re-issue the songs they had recorded for various singles and split releases onto a compilation CD/LP/MP3. All the songs were re-mixed by Devin Ocampo and re-mastered by Chad Clark at Silver Sonya. Working on this project rekindled the band-members' interest in playing the songs and the band reunited (minus bass player Jeff Boswell) for a Brazilian tour in 2007 and plan to perform periodically with the full original line-up once the album is released.

This album will represent the first Dischord release to be available in the digital MP3 format directly from the Dischord Records website. Our new "digital" website will launch on or before June 30th and will feature digital downloads of every Dischord album from our catalog as well as free album downloads with 12" vinyl purchases.

Fort Reno Summer Concert Series To Begin Monday June 23

Jun 03, 2008
Now deemed "arsenic free" and safe for all, Fort Reno will again host its annual Summer Concert Series on Mondays and Thursdays beginning on Monday June 23 with Olivia Mancini & the Housemates, New Rock Church of Fire, and Evolution.

Fort Reno has hosted these concerts every summer for over 30 years. The concerts feature a mixture of seasoned touring bands, young bands just developing their sound and high school bands for whom this may represent their first time on stage -- all from the Washington, DC musical underground. Many, many Dischord bands have played Fort Reno over the years and perhaps more importantly -- many of the musicians who later formed bands that were on Dischord gained their first live experience with high school bands that played Fort Reno.

Once funded by the city, The NW Youth Alliance (the volunteer group that manages the concerts) now relies solely on private donations for their entire budget and could definitely use your support.

New Tests Contradict Arsenic Scare At Ft Reno But Park Remains Closed

May 23, 2008
The Washington Post reports that "District and federal officials released new soil test results yesterday showing that arsenic levels at Fort Reno Park in Northwest Washington are safe" but the National Park Service still has the park barricaded.
If you live in DC you will be familiar with the contradictions that fly back and forth between the federal and local governments. One hand rarely speaks candidly with, much less works with, the other in this town. It is uncertain what this means for the future of the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series but if the soil is safe we say, "Play ball!"

To view the DC government website with its testing data go here

We'll try to keep up to date on the details as they happen so stay tuned.

Edie Sedgwick Working On New Album

This will be one of the first albums on Dischord to be released simultaneously as a 12" Vinyl LP and a Digital MP3 album.

Fort Reno Closed Due To High Levels Of Arsenic

May 15, 2008
Fort Reno, the park in Northwest DC which is home to the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series, has been closed "immediately and Indefinitely" by the US Park Service due to the discovery of high levels of arsenic in the soil.
Until further testing is complete it is unclear what this means for this summer's concert schedule. However, there have been free concerts every summer in Fort Reno for over 30 years and the volunteers who manage the concert series still need your support, be it to fund this year's concerts as scheduled, to find another venue, or to plan something altogether different.

Read more about the closure in this Washington Post blog
