Store Update : Light Beams - Wild Life

Nov 17, 2023
On their new album Wild LifeLight Beams paint a surreal portrait of a world filtered through front person Justin Moyer’s recent experiences as a protest reporter (and a member of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team that covered the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol). The shadow of the attack looms large over the record as the quintet acutely distills nine songs into a twenty-five-minute package that voyages through insurrection deep into the bittersweet heart of 21st-century America.

From their self-titled debut album through 2020’s Self Help, Light Beams have eschewed traditional melody instruments in favor of Moyer’s minimalist samplers and vocals, Sam Lavine’s drumming and Arthur Noll’s basslines. On Wild Life, they expand this palette with the addition of Leah Gage (vocals, rototoms) and Erin McCarley (vocals, timbales, samples). The result: bigger sounds, bigger themes, and a bigger canvas.

This is a split release between Dischord and Mud Memory Records.

Minor Threat - Out of Step Outtakes 7"

Nov 14, 2023
In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the center piece of what became the Out of Step 12" EP.  The band had also decided to re-record the song "Out of Step" with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as "Cashing In", a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once.  After much debate, "Cashing In" was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, "Addams Family" and then recorded new versions of "In My Eyes" and "Filler" to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. "Addams Family" ended up being used as a coda to "Cashing In", but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitized in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of "Addams Family". These outtakes are now released on a 7" to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Out of Step. The 7" of these outtakes is available now for ORDER.

Store Update : Las Mordidas Ex-Voto

Aug 27, 2023
Las Mordidas were a short-lived Washington DC band that existed from Summer 1993 through Spring 1994. The band was comprised of : Chris Thomson (Circus Lupus / Monorchid / Ignition), Dug E. Bird (Beefeater / All-Scars / Fidelity Jones),
Jon K. (Rain / Chrisbald 96 ), and Jerry Busher (Fugazi / All- Scars / Fidelity Jones).

The Chris Thomson-fronted bands Circus Lupus and Monorchid that bookended Las Mordidas have received much more exposure, but Las Mordidas were no less audacious and uncategorizable. The familiar DC rhythm section of Bird and Busher here are augmented by the unhinged guitar talent Jon K.). Jon was a revered, integral character in the DC scene and played in many well-known bands, yet he appeared on scant few recordings. To fans of the late ’80s and early ’90s DC scene, this record is an artifact that it arrives out of the blue and demands an ear.
Ex-Voto was recorded by Geoff Turner at WGNS in 1993 and Brendan Canty at Pirate House in 1994 and is being released for the first time by L.G. Records. Tapes recovered by Jerry Busher and transferred by Ian Mackaye and Don Godwyn. Mastered by Tim Green at Louder. Studios, CA.

Store Update: Fury - Resurrection

Aug 25, 2023
The brief story of Fury: At some point in 1989, members of Washington DC punk bands Swiz and Ignition formed Fury as a loose experiment with no intentions beyond being a diversion. The band existed for a few months, wrote six songs, and played two shows. Shawn Brown and Chris Thomson switched their musical roles from their regular bands as vocalist and bass player. The eyes-closed leap into those unfamiliar positions imbued the recording its feeling of deranged chaos, while the well-seasoned duo of Jason Farrell and Alex Daniels nailed down each song with the signature agility and power displayed in their more familiar work together.

The track “Resurrection” famously made it onto the final Swiz LP. The final track “Last One” got cut off halfway through recording and the band looped and spliced it into a dizzying psychedelic nightmare / masterpiece. The recording has faded into somewhat of an obsurity, a footnote to the larger careers of all of its members.  The recording has now been re-released as a 12" on L.G. Records.

Store Update: Samuel S.C. High Places

Apr 07, 2023
While its makers are firmly rooted in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s DIY scene, Samuel S.C.’s debut LP High Places is very much a product of the present. Featuring eight songs , High Places is equal parts gritty and graceful precision. Several tracks are reimagined 90’s Samuel originals, the remaining were written by the newly configured group between 2021 and 2022.

Store Update: Street Stains - S/t 10"

Mar 03, 2023
In the summer of 2008, Chris took the bus from Brooklyn to Philadelphia every Thursday afternoon to jam with Sean and watch the Olympics. They wrote more than 30 songs. Then they forgot about them until January of 2013. Chris was now living in D.C., and Sean convinced Aaron to cart his Tascam-388 up to Philly for an afternoon of recording. Captured on tape for the ages, these songs were quickly abandoned once more -- until the summer of 2014, when Chris finally recorded the words with Aaron back in D.C. Everybody forgot about the songs one more time before reconvening to mix them in the spring of 2015. And then -- after another two years had vanished into oblivion -- presto! "Street Stains" was released digitally in January 2017 and can finally be forgotten forever. Now on vinyl!

Store Update: Delarcos - Irradiate

Feb 13, 2023
It's been a minute since Nathan Strejcek first emerged on the DC punk scene as lead singer of The Teen Idles and Youth Brigade, and a co-founder of Dischord Records. He is back with a ‘new’ band, The Delarcos, a new record, Irradiate, and a new label, Punkish Records with the help of Dischord.

The Delarcos were founded in 2014 by Sean Epstein (drums, previously with Sisters of Morrissey), Mike Lastort (saxophone, 4th Wall), Kent Campbell (guitar), Jon Hamblin (vocals/guitar, Gleek) and Nathan (bass). The Delarcos contributed a cover of the unreleased Clash song Jericho to 2018 Record Store Day, Crooked Beat Records’ Recutting the Crap, Volume Two. Irradiate was recorded with Pete Banks on drums. Pete left and was replaced by Double Sharp Audio Studio's co-owner Wilfredo Morales (Swingamajig) in 2022.

The Delarcos new record Irradiate evokes the sounds and urgency of no-wave pioneers Pere Ubu, albeit with a more raw, humorous profile. Irradiate was produced by Brooke Delarco, engineered by Norman Van der Sluys and mastered by Tom Lyle (GI) at Inner Ear Studios. It is a split release between Dischord (No. 191.5) and Punkish Records (PR01).

Store Update: Against the Written Word

Jan 23, 2023
Against the Written Word by Ian Svenonius is the most important, most revolutionary book produced since the advent of the printing press; the book that will liberate readers from reading, writers from writing, and booksellers from peddling their despicable wares. This book ushers in a new era of freedom from reading and all its attendant bedfellows such as Enlightenment thinking and the mass alienation wrought by the phonetic alphabet. With nineteen essays ripping, shredding, tearing apart all the bugaboos that haunt humanity nowadays, Against the Written Word is a must-read for any aspiring radical or would-be gnostic who has a penchant for words, thought, clothes, intoxicants, music, art, expression, etc. The work is presented in a range of writing: essays, screenplays, lectures, sci-fi stories, and manifestos, with topics that include “the rise of incorporated man,” “tourism as the neoliberal mode of military occupation,” a workshop on songwriting for the purpose of suggestion and mind control, and many more.
