Beauty Pill to Debut "Immersive Ideal" Recording at Artisphere Jan. 7-22

Dec 29, 2011
Following the Washington, DC band Beauty Pill's summer 2011 open recording residency at Artisphere, the Immersive Ideal project returns with a multimedia installation designed by Kelley Bell and Stephan Moore. The installation will feature a user-interactive, monome-controlled array of photographs from the recording sessions by Nestor Diaz, Morgan Klein, Brian Libby, Jon Pack and PJ Sykes. From January 7-22, you can listen to Beauty Pill's new album --recorded at and presented exclusively at the Artisphere-- while immersed in the photographs that document the band's experiment in radical artistic transparency. The installation will run in the Black Box Theatre itself, where the recording took place, furthering the intimacy between the viewer/listener and the work. Opening reception Sat. For all those who are considering placing orders online, please keep in mind ... Dischord’s mailorder service is about to slow to a crawl. Thursday, December 22nd, will be the last day we’ll be shipping individual orders for a little while. Of course, you're still welcome to place orders, but we won't be back in action until Monday, December 26th.

DC IS DOOMED

Dec 19, 2011
If you’ve ever looked through the other label “stuff we sell” and thought, “I have no idea where to start,” please allow me to help:

Start with The Shirks.

I just went through and listened (again) to all four of their records (all of which are seven inches), and they’re all equally good. I love this band because they’re a shining example of the very best aspects of a classic punk sound. They’re a contemporary band capturing everything that was (and still is) incredible and inspiring about late ‘70s punk (a time when punk sounded like faster/dirtier/snottier rock n roll) without ripping off any of the greats. Al Budd’s vocal delivery lies somewhere between Stiv Bators (Dead Boys) and Chris Bailey (The Saints), the riffs are killer and constant, the bass lines hit Rezillos quality, and Andy Gale’s drumming (as always) just destroys.

The other thing I love about The Shirks is this: There’s almost no information about them on the Internet; meaning, you have to catch them live or buy their records in order to be in-the-know. In a way, it’s a return to the true spirit of the underground, an underground where you actually have to do some digging to find the worthwhile records. And when you find The Shirks, you've hit pay dirt.

Below are links to each release:

The Shirks Dangerous
The Shirks DC Is Doomed
The Shirks Disease
The Shirks Cry, Cry, Cry
(This last one was recorded by Nikhil and features fantastic cover art by Laura Harris.)

Thanks for reading.

All Things J.

Dec 17, 2011
At this point, most people are fairly in-the-know regarding the assorted musical endeavors of J. Robbins. He’s been a prominent and prolific song-writer in the DC area since joining Government Issue back in 1987, on through the Jawbox days, and currently with Office of Future Plans (not to mention the various bands and projects in between). Since the release of the Office of Future Plans record, I’ve been on a bit of a listening-frenzy with J.’s music, spanning the years, and I thought I’d take a moment to share some of my favorites. This is, by no means, a complete list of J.-related projects – that would take an eternity to write and there’s only so much time in a day; this is merely a list of some highlights:

Office of Future PlansSelf Titled
If you haven’t picked this record up yet, do yourself a favor and get to it. This record (besides being a straight-up rocker) is beautiful and thoughtful throughout. If you're looking for an individual song to check out before committing to the whole album, I recommend the song "Ambitious Wrists" for one of the better opening lines ever. Actually, it's not just the opening line … lyrically, this one's tops. All the champion trivialists will race to "see Angkor Wat by satellite," just you watch.

Rollkicker LaydownSelf-titled seven inch
This record is long-since out-of-print, and we have exactly one copy left in the office (which I imagine will get purchased pretty quickly after posting this).
I heard a rough mix of these songs back in 1991 when my brother's old band was recording with Geoff Turner at WGNS. Geoff was kind enough to play it for us in his basement studio, and I immediately couldn't wait for this record to come out. We were already fans of Jawbox, Gray Matter, and 3, so the union of J. and Geoff's vocals was of particular interest. If you read the brief liner notes on this seven inch, you'll notice that the band is made up of Tom Lyle, J., and Pete Moffett, all of whom were in the last incarnation of Government Issue. "No Voices in the Wire" is a great, great song. J.'s voice gets super gruff toward the end, and Pete really lays into the triplet fills.

ChannelsWaiting for the Next End of the World
I've got a soft spot for Channels because I was their driver/roadie on their singular tour to Chicago and back. The tour was great: the band played perfectly every night, the Beauty Pill van actually held together for the duration of the trip, we met a lot of nice and generous folks, and I ended up having all of Channels' songs run through my head for months afterward. Please, please listen to the song "The Licensee," and let Janet Morgan's vocal delivery remain in your head for the rest of the day. It's like incorporating all the beautiful phrasing and hookiness of Stereolab's Mary Hansen (circa Emperor Tomato Ketchup and Dots and Loops) into a powerful and upbeat rock song. I absolutely love this track. Most will probably hang on to "Chivaree" as the song that has it all (especially if you hone in on whatever it is Darren Zentek's playing during the chorus – impossible! and he makes it look so easy), but I'm still sticking with "The Licensee."

JawboxGrippe
Here's another record that I couldn't wait for – mainly because I had the Jawbox demo tape on constant rotation during high school and I was anxious to hear new studio versions. With this release, I've always had a certain affection for the song "Green-Line Delayed." I used to look at the DC Metro map in the late '80s and early '90s (while living in Suitland) with tremendous frustration; it seemed the Green line would NEVER be finished. Now I don't know if that's what this Jawbox song is about, but that's the meaning I took from it when I was in high school.
We have one vinyl copy of Grippe in stock right now, and it's missing the cover. Seriously, I've looked everywhere for an extra cover, and there are none here in the office. If you end up buying this copy (sans cover), it will be marked down on our website to 5 dollars.
If you end up buying the CD, do not overlook the song "Footbinder." The lyrics are heartbreaking and poignant.

Various ArtistsPlay (compilation)
When J. recorded the Soccer Team song for this record, "I'll Never Fear Ghosts Again," Melissa and I asked him to provide a guitar solo for it, which he did, and it's my favorite moment in the song (besides Melissa's vocal part during the chorus, of course). I think J. was channeling his inner-DEVO when he came up with that, which was perfect and appropriate.

JawboxTongues
Many people don't know, but we actually still have a lot of these in stock at Dischord. This marks the first appearance of Bill Barbot on the Jawbox records, making the band a four-piece and expanding the live vocal parts quite a bit.

JawboxMotorist
We still have these in stock, too (although not nearly as many). This record, engineered by Ian and Don, marks the first appearance of Zach Barocas on drums. It's mostly known for the B-Side, "Motorist," but the unsung hero is the A-side: "Jackpot Plus." The lyrics clearly paint a scene that references the ugliness of gambling. And the chorus trails off simply, "Someday I …"

Office of Future PlansSelf-released, Self-titled seven inch
We don't have any more copies of this record, but if you see it out on planet Earth somewhere, pick it up. The B-Side features a fantastic Stranglers cover, "Everybody Loves You When You're Dead." A great tribute to a great band.

Thanks for reading.

Fugazi Live Series Off and Running!

Dec 01, 2011
The Fugazi Live Series website officially launched on December 1, 2011. You can now click to the site from the main Dischord menu or navigate directly to www.dischord.com/fugazi_live_series without any login restrictions (although purchases still require a free Dischord account).

We do expect some bumps along the road as traffic spikes and the site adjusts so don't be alarmed if you experience sluggish performance from time to time. As more traffic data comes through we will be making adjustments accordingly.

Fugazi played over 1000 concerts, covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. Over 800 of these shows were recorded by the band's sound engineers, often on high quality recording gear.

The Fugazi Live Series is a complete online archive of these concerts. Show pages will feature data from the concerts and (when available) related photos, flyers and MP3 downloads. The goal is to make the shows available to browse for free or to download for a small fee. Initially the band will release 130 downloads (101 new shows plus 29 of the shows released on the now out-of-print Fugazi Live CD series). Additional downloads, photos, flyers, etc. will be added regularly until the entire archive is available.

In keeping with the band's philosophy of keeping music affordable, the suggested price of a concert download is $5. However, we also offer a sliding scale option where you can set your own price. Additionally, we offer an All Access option that will allow you to download every show on the site - that would include all 130 presently available downloads as well as all subsequent shows that will be added to the site over time.

Fugazi Live Series is a wing of the Dischord Records website and utilizes the secure Dischord online store for payment and delivery of the downloads. The site was designed and produced by Dischord's Alec Bourgeois and was developed by Jerrod Blavos of RecCenter. All shows were mastered by Jerry Busher except the 30 shows initially released on CD, which were mastered by Fugazi. Thanks to Peter Oleksik, Lindsey Hobbs, and Amy Breesman for their expertise and help organizing the Fugazi archive. And a special thanks to the many photographers who have generously shared their work.

Records from Other Labels Available through Our Web Store

Oct 29, 2011
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve acquired many new releases from other labels. To see images of each record, take a look at the "Featured DC Bands/Labels" section on our store page (click on the Stuff We Sell tab). For a quick run down of what we picked up and what’s available through our web store, read on...

The GiftMostly in Sickness
This is an eight-song 12 inch released on Amor y Lucha, and it’s a dark and intense rocker throughout. This is the type of record that won’t work as background music. I suggest listening loudly while actually engaging with it: read the lyrics and spend some time with front and back cover art (I’m a sucker for good hand lettering). Songs to obsess over… "Corpse Reviver," "No Nothing," and "Quitter."

The FordistsWatch You
The first thing that should grab you about this record is the cover art (if the tiny jpeg doesn’t appear too impressive, trust me, the 12 inch version looks incredible). A lot of love went into both front and back covers. This is a ten-song LP released from Amor y Lucha. The songs are up-tempo and played with serious precision. Fans of Hoover, Louisville’s Crane, and the mighty Minutemen might be interested in this one. I’m not saying that the Fordists sound like any of those bands… they really have their own sound… I’m just saying that there’s a similar vibe when it comes to song-writing approach. The jam on this record is the second song on Side B, possibly known as “Killed Your Dog.”

More HumansDemon Station
Five-song 10 inch record released on Cricket Cemetery, featuring the work of Clinton Doggett, Andrew Fishbein, and Marko Sonevytsky. The songs are thoughtful and wonderfully produced (the drums sound exactly the way drums should sound – great job, Nick!). Each track is heavily vocal-driven with a focus on a sort of classic rock approach to harmonies. This record is TOTALLY worth it for the songs “Mason-Dixon” and “You’re a Liar” (the latter of which is a particular highlight of the record).

The Bam Bamss/t 7 inch
A three-song 45 with tons of lo-fi pop/garage appeal. I like this record a lot. It’s a return to the hook! Great cover art, too. If you look carefully at the front cover collage, you’ll see there’s a tiny illustrated body builder peeking out from the bottom of Mickey Mouse’s red shorts. The back cover appears to be screen-printed and hand numbered (in crayon).

Hollywood/Mean Jeanssplit 7 inch
This is a two-song split 45 released on Big Neck Records. For those of you who like riffs and hooks akin to the Ramones (should be anyone with a pulse), this record is for you. A perfectly matched split single – it’s tough to pick which side I like better.

The ShondesSearchlights (CD only)
This is a ten-song CD released by Exotic Fever. The Shondes have been around since 2006, and this is their third album. Their sound (bass, guitar, drums, and violin) is polished and super-produced, mixing elements of charged pop, punk, and rock.

Beauty Pill To Record "In Residence" At Artisphere July 16 - Aug 2

Jul 07, 2011
Beauty Pill has been commissioned to record a new album at the Artisphere Black Box Theater in Arlington, VA from July 16 until August 2nd. The entire process will be open to the public with sessions commencing daily from Noon until 10pm.

Band-leader Chad Clark describes the process as such, "I am taking a bunch of existing sketches of varying degrees of sophistication (some are raw, skeletal demos others are more sonically developed) into the room and on that day we will try to bring them into focus and vivify those designs. Since everyone in the band plays multiple instruments, we don't even know what instruments they will play.
We will shape the music communally on that day. This will involve a discussion and scrambling to learn parts. We may discard the sketches entirely and start fresh that day. Or we may grab certain existing parts and supplant others with new performances or... I have no idea what's gonna happen."

Chad will be joined by Basla Andolsun, Jean Cook, Drew Doucette, Abram Goodrich and Devin Ocampo. The finished product will be played at the Black Box Theater in surround sound at a date to be determined later this fall.

For more info visit the Artisphere website.

Beauty Pill have also made the original demo for "Ann The Word" available for download for free here on the Washington Citypaper website.

New and notable

Jun 29, 2011
D.C. rockers the Shirks keep it quick and dirty on their latest three-track 7", Cry Cry Cry, out on Grave Mistake. This band gets the face-melting done very efficiently.

There's lots of good chatter about the complete recordings of D.C. girl band Chalk Circle, which had its heyday in the early '80s punk scene. Reflection features tracks from early '80s tape compilations as well as live songs and basement demos.

People are also very excited about Jesuit's Discography. The metal/hardcore band's members went on to join Converge and the Dillinger Escape Plan. The band's first and only major release, 15 years after the breakup!

We also have more copies of We Owe You Nothing by Dan Sinker, which is a collection of interviews from Punk Planet magazine. Artists featured include Ian MacKaye, Henry Rollins, Sleater-Kinney and Bob Mould.
We should be getting more of The Argument in the coming weeks, and we've just received a few spare copies of Margin Walker, which we were out of for a while.

Title Tracks European Tour; New LP on the Way!

Title Tracks, featuring John Davis of Q and Not U, are about to head out on a European tour in support of the band's second full-length, In Blank, due out next month.

The track is backed with another instrumental, "Arpeggiator 2.0," which includes a live drum track over a sample of Fugazi's "Arpeggiator."

"American Originals Now" With Jem Cohen At The National Gallery (DC) Feb 12, 27th

Feb 07, 2011
Since the early 1980s, American filmmaker Jem Cohen has been creating a unique oeuvre of shorts and features that extends the principles of portraiture to nonfiction cinema. Working in collaboration with his artist subjects, usually over several years and in a range of formats, Cohen's work both documents and transcends conventions. Shorts and excerpts from works in progress, introduced by the artist himself, are followed by Instrument, his feature on the musical group Fugazi. This program is the initial installment of a new quarterly film event, "American Originals Now." Program details follow the jump.

Jem Cohen: Recent Shorts and Other Works
February 12 at 2:30PM
East Building Concourse, Auditorium

Director Jem Cohen in person

A program of new shorts surveys a range of concerns, from artists' creative processes to life lived on the streets of contemporary America. Cohen's patient lens portrays steady labor, scenes from the everyday, or simply hanging out, always colliding with provocative soundscapes. Titles include Anne Truitt, Working (2009, 13 minutes), a portrait of an artist and trusted friend; Half the Battle (2008, 12 minutes), "a reflection on the phenomenon of the touring musician"; Night Scene New York (2009, 10 minutes), observations of Chinatown commissioned by the Museum of Chinese in the Americas; and a few rousing excerpts from works in progress, including a feature recorded in Vienna, Austria. (Approximate running time 90 minutes)

Members of Fugazi in person

One of Washington's most successful bands, Fugazi is the epitome of DIY (Do It Yourself) ethics. Its members are both subjects and collaborators with Cohen on this documentary, part of the 2000 Whitney Biennial and winner of many awards. Incorporating more than 10 years of recordings, Instrument weaves personal and concert footage, observational film, collected sound, and Fugazi's own original music into an epic portrait of the band, their environment, and the counterculture of the 1980s and '90s. "I thought of bringing 'dub' to documentary—of a project where unadulterated real-time performances, abstract, rough-hewn Super-8 collages and archival artifacts would collide and conjoin in a way that honestly represented musical experience"—Jem Cohen. (1999, digiBeta, 115 minutes)

New tape from Imminent Frequencies

Jan 28, 2011
The latest release from Imminent Frequences, who brought us a very popular Zomes tape late last year, features Jacob Long from Mi Ami and Black Eyes. Earthen Sea's Waves is a cassette with "Radiation" on Side A and "Ocean / Stormy" on Side B.

Black Eyes released their self-titled debut full-length LP on Dischord. They followed it up with Cough in 2004. The first time I heard "Deformative" from the s/t album, I was hooked.

I've been more than impressed with what the former band members have accomplished since. Both Jacob and Daniel Martin-McCormick played in Mi Ami and put out a slew of records - Steal Your Face and Watersports, to name a few. Jacob left the band last year, but Martin-McCormick and bandmate Damon Palermo recorded Dolphins, which will be released on Thrill Jockey in 2011.

New Stuff From Dismemberment Plan, M'lady's & More

Jan 20, 2011
The long-awaited Emergency & I reissue from the Dismemberment Plan is here, for the first time on vinyl! Former Q and Not U member Chris Richards wrote a nice piece - with a personal touch - on the band's reunion for the Washington Post.

There's a fresh batch of singles from the M'lady's crew. Buoy, the second release from La La Vasquez, a trio of London ladies in harmony. For something on the shoutier side, check out the Landlord Song 7" from Portland, Oregon's Magic Johnson.

There's a 4-song 7" from noisy Brighton, UK, band The Sticks, Scrapes, and something new from Coasting, whose single The One We Both Like received a lot of positive feedback from both customers and stores. This new one's called Same Old Same Old.

And finally, we've got the debut 4-song 7" from DC-based rockers Beasts of No Nation. The band features Andrew Black, who had a stint in Title Tracks and put out a 7" of his own, and Mike Schleibaum of Darkest Hour. Also features members of Majority Rule and Trial by Fire.

The Warmers Featured on the DCist "Secret History" Series

Jan 20, 2011

Dischord Records 4.0 Beta Is Now Live

Jan 17, 2011
We have just installed a major upgrade to the internal structure of the Dischord Records website that we hope will better enable us to serve the excellent content that we have to offer. We are thrilled to present some new features which include: single file album downloads, one page check-out, commenting, a new mail-order blog and an entirely new Stuff We Sell store interface.

However, it must be noted that while we are live, filling orders and secure, our work is ongoing and we expect some bumps and bruises as everything comes together so please be patient with us as we flush out the bugs and feel free to alert us at digital[at]dischord.com to report any issues that may have slipped our notice.

For a full accounting of the new features on the site see our new mail-order blog.

Orthrelm to play at Animal Collective-curated ATP

Jan 12, 2011
Orthrelm, with Mick Barr on guitar and Josh Blair on drums, will play at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival curated by the band Animal Collective.
The three-day music festival takes place in Minehead, United Kingdom, from May 11 - 13.

Barr is known for his incredible guitar skills. The record is written in the band's own language, and it's one of the first things someone played for me in the office when I started working here because there's just nothing else like it. There's nowhere to even begin wrapping your head around the record - he's extremely adept at playing guitar ... and very fast.

We currently have Iorxhscimtor in stock on LP.

Mick also played in Crom Tech. We have that self-titled LP in stock as well, and it's on sale!

Congrats to Orthrelm for this great nod to their talent.

Welcome To The New Web-Store

Jan 11, 2011
We have launched a major upgrade to the Dischord store which includes a brand new interface for the store and several new features that our longtime customers have been asking for, such as single file album downloads and a simplified check-out system.

The Dischord web-store carries hundreds of releases from bands and labels related in one way or another to the DC underground. The new store interface presents many more Featured Releases sections and clear navigation directly to the artists and labels whose releases we carry.

The Stuff We Sell store page also features this new blog which will be maintained by our mail-order guru, Rebecca, and will present news, updates, and general useful tidbits more specific to our mail-order customers. Read about the new store features after the jump!

Single File Album Downloads: We now offer the option to download your MP3 album purchase as a single compressed Zip file. This file will expand into a folder containing album tracks once it is downloaded and opened on your home computer. Please note that although these files are compressed they are still quite large and may take a long time to download without a high-speed internet connection. If you do not have a high-speed connection or simply prefer to download your MP3 tracks on at a time you may still do so. Your personal "My Account" page is where you will manage your tracks.

Disclaimer: We do not recommend using our download service unless you have a modest technical understanding of your home computer and its music software. Download times vary and can be quite long for single file album downloads. Dischord cannot be held responsible for customer software or hardware systems that may be incompatible with the delivery or functionality of Zip files or MP3 music files, nor can we be held responsible for any damage incurred by the improper handling of these files. Dischord does not support third party download managers, which can flood our system with unsupported data requests and compromise your tracks. If you have any questions you may call us at 703-351-7507 or send an email to [email protected]

Single Page Checkout: We have simplified our check-out process to a single page that adjusts to the shipping and payment options your select. If you have purchased digital albums or tracks, or vinyl with free MP3s, you will be able to download your material immediately upon check-out, without having to navigate to another part of the website.

Commenting: We are experimenting with adding comment sections to our news items and release pages. Commenting is available to account holders and will be monitored. We encourage the respectful exchange of ideas and opinions but we are not interested in noise or bigotry so, you know...do the right thing.

New Store Interface: Our new store interface relies more on Featured Releases sections and a more powerful search function to guide you to the many kinds of Dischord and non-Dischord content that we carry. We've never had a problem featuring Dischord stuff but we also carry hundreds of very cool CDs, LPs, Books, etc. from other Washington, DC related bands and labels and we'd like to offer them a better platform to be seen and heard.

Dischord Distribution Changes For 2011

Jan 06, 2011
As of January 1st, for the first time in 25 years, all Dischord Records operations --production, distribution, and sales-- will be run entirely out of the Dischord offices in Arlington, VA. In 1983 Ian and Jeff met John Loder and accepted his generous offer to help distribute Minor Threat records in Europe through his company, Southern Studios. This soon led to a 25 year partnership that eventually saw the entire label going through Southern's production and distribution machine in the UK and later in Chicago as well. We've been well looked after by John and his lieutenants Allison, Jam, Danielle, Zespy and many, many others. But John's passing in 2005 coincided with a major transformation in the nature of independent distribution and thus began the gradual unwinding of the partnership. We are grateful for the love, respect and hard work that the Loder/Southern/CID family gave to the label. We literally couldn't have done it without them. But we are not done yet, in fact we are very excited for the future and as long as people find what we do valuable, we'll keep doing it!

Dischord Webstore Currently Offline For Maintenance

Jan 03, 2011
The Dischord web-store is currently offline as we undergo a major internal upgrade (4.0!) for 2011. No orders can be processed at this time but we hope to be back online within 24 hours so please check back soon. We will have more information about our store upgrades very soon. In the meantime we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and continued support!
